Diagnostic Imaging

Images can help a veterinarian investigate a concern that a physical exam alone cannot fully explain. Unity Animal Hospital offers X-rays and ultrasound for small animals.

What we can talk through

  • X-rays can show bones and the outlines of structures in the chest and abdomen. They may help reveal a fracture, certain swallowed objects, or changes in the size or shape of internal structures.
  • Ultrasound uses sound waves to show soft tissues and organs in real time. It can help the veterinarian examine abdominal organs, look for fluid, and see movement that a still X-ray cannot show.
  • The two tests answer different questions and sometimes work together. After examining your pet, the veterinarian can explain which images may be useful and whether more testing is needed.

Planning your visit

Tell us what has changed and bring relevant past test results if you have them. Preparation depends on the area being examined; the team can explain any instructions when arranging the visit.
